Week 5 – Artist Conversation -Tony Nguyen

Artist: Tony Nguyen

Exhibition: Fuse: Join To Form a Single Entity

Media: Metals

Gallery: CSULB School of Art (West Gallery)

Instagram: @elll_tigre

Tony was a really nice guy, he seemed very shy and timid. I loved his positivity and how he answered all the questions with respect. Tony said he gets inspired by everyday life, and just from what he sees. Nguyen is from Gardena, Ca and was born here. He took 2 semesters making all the Armor. He got in to school for painting and drawing and then realized it wasn’t really his thing so he went to illustration then a year later  realized he loved ceramics and wood instead. Whats next for Tony is he wants to go to Ucsd for his MFA.

Tony’s bread and butter is metal, his so talented at it. The specific detail in his work is amazing. Their is so much detail ad some of his metal pieces are so small. Thats what fascinated me the most. Some of the pieces I saw I never thought id see in a college gallery I would’t have even think of making that.

Week 5 – Art Experience – Cuisine

I cant express the love my family has for fruit. We literally rack up boxes of different fruits in the fridge. i opened the fridge and that was the only thing I realized i can make (because I can’t cook 😦  ). I found strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, pineapples and tangerines. I mixed them all up, put them in a bowl and added some fruit juice. I then added some sugar and sprayed some whipped cream on top. I then added a few berries on top of the whipped cream, to give it that chic fancy look. I then made 1 extra one and gave it to my little sister.

P.s. she was in shock I made her something

Week 4 – Art Experience – Graffiti

I’ve never really used spray cans before i have for a little for an art class but I never did a project using it. I was always fascinated to use spray cans because i’ve seen such cool artwork done on instagram with them. Im also a huge fan of graffiti art. I don’t think its cool to graffiti on the streets but I always though the art was cool, like on freeways and stuff. as I was using the spray Cans it was really windy outside so I had to tilt the can at a certain angle against the wind so the paint can come out clean. I got a basic ply wood 5 x 2 feet long. I sprayed the black all over for the background. i got some nice light colors and just did what I felt like doing. I used a quote that I saw online about a week ago and I really liked it. I really enjoy short meaningful quotes with about 5 words or less. LIVE TO INSPIRE!graf3

Samuel was a really cool dude, I loved his artwork and his persona. He seemed like a real chill dude that I would actually hang out with. Sam recently finished his BFA in in ceramics at CSULB last fall. From an outside view, its very clear that Sam’s art primarily explores the ideas of whimsical, cartoonish ideas. When asked how he got these ideas, he essentially stated that he never creates art he doesn’t find funny. Sam told us a lot of interesting things about himself. He loves music and plays the guitar. He also loves to ride his bike in the mountains. He gets his inspiration and motivation from his everyday life, such as when he bikes and listens to music to get in his groove.

When I first walked in the gallery and saw all this color and cool cartoon sculptures, it really gave me a happy and positive vibe and reminded me of Disneyland and the Disney characters. Someone mentioned the Disney feel to his art, he said that Disney was a huge inspiration to him. His sculptures have a lot of basic shapes and lines as if it resembled a women like figure for instance in one of his paintings.  It was one piece where the fish was smiling but broken on the side and when talking to to him he expressed that the fish represents the struggles of life but you must always keep a smile.

I loved Sam’s art and good energy he had. He was really inspirational to me and i really loved his positive vibes. I feel like his artwork has so much color that it just has to make you feel good. His ceramic are amazing, this dude is really talented i think he has a bright future ahead of him.

Week 3 – Artist – Josh Vasquez

Artist: Josh Vasquez

Exhibition: Vida/Morte

Media: Plastic Trash Bags, Flowers, Ink Markers, Acrylic on Red Rosin Paper

Gallery: CSULB School of Art (West Gallery)

Josh is currently an Undergraduate student at Csulb in his 5th year in the BFA Painting and Drawing Program. Other then doing art and working on his Painting and Drawing pieces he also likes photography. Vasquez grew up in downtown LA  and started painting and drawing at a young age.

I enjoyed Josh’s Gallery that day, as you walk in to the gallery you just feel like your in this really cool and dark space. with the canvas all around the walls and the different flowers and flower pedals on the floor. I thought Josh’s work was fascinating. His use of dark colors gives it the feel of fear and darkness when viewing a piece or pieces. He also used many thick rounded lines and shapes which much contrast to the straighter, narrower ones in the piece. Also the curvy shapes he used primarily are very jagged which creates some intensity to his pieces. As people were talking to Josh and asking him Questions, it seemed like he did want to talk much, he seemed like a really quiet and shy dude. His answers were really short, but I respect that it didn’t bother me one bit. I wasent really shocked because his art pieces were really dark and had a cold feel to it which I loved so much, there was one piece I thought really amazed me that he drew on canvas. in my opinion Josh’s art explored the idea of life and death, the name Vida/Morte. In his artist statement, Josh said he “wanted to relate the materials of the artwork to the overall theme. he chose to think of the pieces as having a life span”.

You can really tell Josh put a lot of heart and time in to this project. I really enjoyed his work the most. I loved the feel and vibes I got from his work, it put me in place i like to be, I know its kind of weird but I like being put in that mindset and getting his feel on life and how he felt as that moment. The rough feel his paintings give with all his lines and shapes with his use of color only really using black, white and grey.

Week 3 – Art Experiance – Snapchat

This was my first time at the Lb State Art Gallery. I never really knew we had one and didn’t think it would look that nice, and still looks very professional and modern. I thought it was really cool and interesting, seeing different things and getting different perspectives from other college students really influenced me. Seeing the small things and details in different pieces were pretty cool to look at it.

The first snap i took was a really cool piece that moved me the most I loved the black and white filter to focus more on the other colors. I drew a little face on the canvas, I don’t know why I did that I just thought it kind of reminded me of one of my friends faces so i drew it. I actually sent him the snap to!
